Aguilar de la Frontera, Córdoba, Spain

Aguilar de la Frontera Tourist Information:

Aguilar de la Frontera is a municipality in the province of Cordoba, in Andalusia, Spain. Located at the heart of Campiña Sur, the town of Aguilar still has a characteristic noble feel to it, that of a town that played an important part in the history of the region. Its traditional houses, noble buildings and great number of renaissance and baroque churches make Aguilar a great place to visit and offer a great number of sights to see.

Places of interest in Aguilar de la Frontera:

Along the walk through the town, a must is PLAZA DE SAN JOSÉ, also known as PLAZA OCHAVADA (or the Octagonal Square), which is a civil work dating back to the early 19th century, reflecting the spirit for urban reform that was seen in the town at the time. As well as being attractive, it also stands out for being one of the few octagonal squares anywhere in Spain. Among the emblematic buildings in Aguilar, there is also the TORRE DEL RELOJ (or Clock Tower), the construction of which was paid for by the townspeople.
The town is very interesting as it preserves an Arab air, with narrow, winding streets that seem to follow no strict plan. On this walk, you can see some of the CASAS SOLARIEGAS (or mansions) dotted throughout the town, desde la calle Moralejo hasta las calles Carrera y Pozuelo.
Other highlights include the great number of religious buildings in the town, including the CHURCH OF NUESTRA SEÑORA DEL SOTERRAÑO, in a gothic mudejar style, or the CHURCH OF LA VERA CRUZ, a temple dating back to the mid-17th century which has spectacular platerwork.
Another must is the CONVENT OF LAS DESCALZAS (or Convent of the Barefoot Sisters), a Carmelite convent founded in 1671 with paintings, plasterwork, altarpieces and religious artwork that form a multicoloured tapestry of refined ornamentation.
Visitors who want to enjoy magnificent views of the town should make their way to the POLEY CASTLE, located on a rocky outcrop overlooking the countryside. After countless attacks and restorations, there only currently remain fragments of the walls and disfigured remnants of a tower on the Peñón del Moro (or Moorish Rock). Nonetheless, the spectacular views remain intact.

Nature in Aguilar de la Frontera:

Around Aguilar, you can find the LAGUNA DE ZÓÑAR, the largest of the lakes in the Reserva Natural de las Lagunas del Sur de Córdoba, which stands out for its special features that make it ideal for the hibernation and nesting of migratory birds, and the conservation of species such as the white-headed duck (Oxyura leucocephala) or purple gallinule.
