The finest monument in the town is in the PLAZA DE ARMAS, the DUKE’S PALACE is one of the most striking civil buildings in the Córdoba region. It stands out for its façade, flanked by two towers, one built from materials from the medieval period and with a line of canons built into the walls to commemorate the defeat of the English admiral Blake by one of the town’s nobles in the 17th century. Inside, the cloistered courtyard, imposing staircase and chapel all stand out. Behind it are the stepped terraces of the gardens, offering pleasant surroundings for an excellent view over the surrounding countryside. The stables, school, inn and town hall complete this striking 18th-century setting.

Another of the most picturesque buildings is the CHURCH OF SANTA MARINA DE AGUAS SANTAS, dedicated to the Virgin Mary who, according to legend, appeared here in 1382 to a shepherdess to warn her about a Moorish attack on the area.

As evidence of her actions, she made a spring come from the stone she was standing on. The temple was built between 1725 and 1740 on the site of the former medieval church, founded at the end of the 14th century. Inside, there are a number of altarpieces with paintings from the seventeen hundreds and a glass case holding a valuable collection of liturgical gold and silverware. By the church, the Calles Feria and Ángel Espejo, with their whitewashed houses and iron grills, passages and courtyards, offer an attractive backdrop for a walk through the old town. A visit to the parish church of Vera Cruz, rebuilt in 1960, is also worthwhile, or the hermitages of el Calvario and Caridad, which have lost some of their 18th century charm following recent repairs.
