General Information:

Moeche is a municipality of the province o A Coruña, in Galicia, Spain. Is part of Comarca de Ferrol, one of the inland boroughs that boast one of the region´s top tourist attractions: The Castle of Moeche.

Moeche occupies some 48.5 km² and is divided into 5 parishes: Abade Santiago, Labacengos, Santa María, San Xoan de Moeche and Santa Cruz de Moeche, and has a populatión around 1400.

Places of Interest:

Moeche Castle is a medieval construction that dates back to the 14th century and holds close ties with the Andrade family. It is renowned for its 18 metre high keep and a moat on the western side that was hewn out of the rock. It was the site of the so-called Os Irmandiños Revolt, when the serfs rose up in an attempt to shake off the sackles of the feudal system, forcing the Andrade family to flee their fortress and seek refuge in Pontedeume, A Coruña. The Irmandiño Festival is held each year in order to commemorate the victory.

Festivals and events:

Since 1980, the Irmandiño Festival has been held on the third Saturday in August in an around the castle, to commemorate the 15th century Irmandiños Revolt. The day´s events include picnics, barbecues of roasted sardines and performances by variuous folk groups. The highlight is the attack on the castle that takes place at midnight.
